About: Bastions
A Bastion is a personal domain tied to a player character — it might be a home, a fortress, or a center of influence that the character gradually builds up throughout the campaign. It serves as a temporary sanctuary from the perils of adventuring life and opens up possibilities for pursuits like crafting magical items, researching lore, extracting poisons, constructing vessels, and engaging in other specialized tasks.
As the Dungeon Master, it’s up to you to determine whether Bastions are part of your campaign. They work best in campaigns that give characters time to return home between adventures. Not every player has to participate — some may choose to develop a Bastion, while others may prefer to focus solely on adventuring.
Having a Bastion doesn’t mean giving up the adventuring life — characters can manage both. Bastions contain special facilities that grant ongoing advantages and can carry out tasks even while their owners are away.
Above all, Bastions are spaces for creativity and collaborative storytelling. Encourage your players to explore their ideas within these spaces, while making it clear that the events in their Bastions may still be shaped by the campaign’s broader narrative — which, as always, should aim to keep the experience fun and engaging for all.
